The Sacroiliac (SI) Joint and Dysfunction
What is it?
Your SI, or sacroiliac joint, connects each leg to the rest of your body where the spine meets the pelvis. When one or both of these joints lose their normal motion, it can lead to SI joint pain, also known as sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD).
This condition generally falls into two main categories: mechanical and arthritic. Mechanical SIJD happens when the joint moves too much or too little, throwing off balance and stability. Arthritic SIJD is caused by arthritis in the joint—either from natural wear and tear over time (like osteoarthritis) or from inflammation related to autoimmune conditions.
When the SI joint isn’t moving properly, the surrounding muscles often have to work harder to compensate. This leads to tightness, compression, inflammation, pain, and even more restriction, creating a cycle of discomfort and limited movement.

Causes of SI Joint Pain
Movement Pattern Issues
Sacroiliac problems may be caused by repetitive activity, poor posture, leg length differences, flat feet, or any other condition that affects how you walk.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy can also trigger sacroiliac problems due to weight gain, gait changes, and postural stress.
Trauma
Trauma, such as a fall, car accident, or sudden impact to the pelvis or lower back, can disrupt the alignment or stability of the SI joint, leading to inflammation and pain. Even small but repetitive stresses from these events can trigger long-lasting discomfort in the area.
